-  NBA LACK OF POST GAME & SIZE IN THE MIDDLE BEING FILLED BY EUROPEAN LEAGUE BIGS

The 2013 NBA Draft is coming up on Thursday and Ukrainian 20 year old center Olexiy (Alex) Len, who played college ball at the University of Maryland for two years is being projected as a top 5 pick by most NBA Mock drafts. The 7' 1", 255 pound young center will be the latest in a growing list of European big-men that are now starting or playing big minutes at the NBA 5 spot position, a list that includes 2013 NBA defensive player of the year, Spanish center Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies and his brother PF & Center Pau Gasol of the Lakers, Montenegrin bull big-man Nikola Pekovic, who played with Minnesota Twolves last year, French national team big Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, Turkish big-man Omer Asik of the Houston Rockets, former ACB league Brazilian Tiago Splitter of the San Antonio Spurs, former ACB league Brazilian center Anderson Varejao, Greek national team big Kostas Koufos, Lithuanian big Jonas Valanciunas of the Toronto Raptors, Polish big Marcin Gortat of the Phoenix Suns, Georgian big Zaza Pachulia of the Atlanta Hawks, Montenegrin Big Nikola Vucevic of the Orlando Magic, French big Kevin Seraphin of the Washington Wizards, Lithuanian PF & Center Donatas Motiejunas of the Houston Rockets, French big Johan Petro of the Atlanta Hawks, young Turkish big Enes Kanter of the Utah Jazz, former ACB league center Congolese big Bismack Biyombo, French big Ian Mahinmi and Ukrainian big Viacheslav Kravtsov of the Detroit Pistons.   Some Mock drafts have the Cavs grabbing Olexiy Len with the top pick and if they do, it would be the first European player taken with the number one pick, since the Toronto Raptors took Andrea Bargnani. Olexiy Len had a good sophmore year at Maryland showing a nice all around offensive game, being able to stick a face up 15 foot jumper and rolls hard to the bucket for athletic dunks, also has good post moves and will only get better, since he is only 20 years of age. Olexiy had a fine U-18 European championships with the Ukrainian national team in 2010 with a tournament average 16 Points, 11.4 Rebounds, 4.3 Blocks, before going to play college ball at Maryland. In an NBA league, where centers are hard to find EUROJOHNBBALL thinks Olexiy Len should be the Cavs pick to help the Kyrie Irving led club with inside scoring and is a fine shot blocking guy, who blocked 2.1 per game in 24.5 minutes per game in his two year college basketball career.  In an NBA where the best American centers are Dwight Howard, Roy Hibbert, Brook Lopez and Greg Monroe, the trend seems to keep looking to European leagues to find players to fit the center spot and this could be because the European leagues still play basic inside-out ball, while the NCAA college teams and NBA, seem to use the big men as more pick and roll guys, letting the guards take more 3 pointers without letting the big man touch the ball inside for a back to the basket move. The no post-up mentality that many NBA teams use towards the NBA center spot, was shown last year, when former Philadelphia 76ers Montenegrin big-man Nikola Vucevic rarely got a shot to show his good right and left handed hook shots in the Doug Colins system of letting the guards take many jumpers, but when he was traded to the Orlando Magic, he got a shot to show his back to the basket game that he showed with Buducnost in the Adriatic league during the lockout NBA season and he put up 13.1 PTS and 11.9 REB per game with the Magic. Other Euro big men like Nikola Pekovic, Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol, Jonas Valanciunas and Kevin Seraphin can do damage in the paint, while Donatas Motiejunas has the entire package of being able to stick a deep shot, pump fake defenders and take big defenders off the dribble and has an old-school Lazaros Papadopoulos type of post game with the ability to finish with either hand in the paint, off good up and under moves and shoulder fakes, but the small ball 3 point system of the Rockets will not let the casual NBA fan see what EUROJOHNBBALL already knows, that the kid has game all over the court and his good post moves must be used instead of using the player like Kyle Korver, just stuck in the corner watching James Harden pound the ball, waiting for a deep 3 point shot attempt, that makes the unique Lithuanian 7 foot player look more like a 6 foot 5 inch jump shooter and his Dirk Nowitzki potential is just flat out wasted.
